I found a puppy in the trash,
A little scruffy, full of sass.
He wagged his tail, he licked my face,
And sniffed around the dirty place.

I said, “Oh, Dumpster Puppy, come,
Let’s take you home.

This is no place for a pup to roam”
He jumped in boxes, chewed my shoe,
He even tried to eat my glue.

He rolled in mud, he stole my fries,
He chased the cat, then jumped so high.
He napped on couches, tore my shirt,
And dug a hole right in the dirt.

I smiled and said, “You’re so much fun,
My Dumpster Puppy, you are the one!”
But then my mom came through the door,
And screamed, “What is that on the floor?!”

He is our new pup, what should be name him
Her face turned pale, her eyes went dim.
she screamed so loud, you could hear her from the moon—
“That’s not a puppy, that’s a raccoon!”

(Inspired by an actual dumpster puppy named Buck and a raccoon-like human named Jake)

This is your chance to be published.

I'm creating a poetry book, and for every poem, I'm inviting one visual artist to join me by having their artwork featured alongside it. This contest is open to all ages, all styles, and all skill levels—from detailed illustrations to expressive stick figures. I'm not looking for perfection. I'm looking for emotion. Vibe. Story. Soul.

I haven’t decided what kind of art I want for each poem yet—and I’m keeping it that way on purpose. I’ll know it when I see it. So whatever your medium or method—if it speaks to the piece, it could win.

    Winners will receive:

    • Full credit in the book (your name + social handle listed)

    • Early access to purchase the book before anyone else

    • A special discount code just for you to share with friends and family

    • Feature shoutouts on my platforms

    • And a surprise gift from me to you—just as a thank-you for being part of this journey

    • (...and maybe more as this grows)

This project is all about community, creativity, and shared expression. Whether you're a professional or just love to create, if a poem speaks to you—draw it, paint it, collage it, sketch it. Submit it.

    Let’s make something beautiful—together.
